NQF 1: Plant
Production Learnership at simply indigenous nursery

Learners practicing the planting of seeds
The Simply Indigenous Nursery training project consisted of the
farm-based training of 13 employees of the nursery in Port
Shepstone in an NQF 1: Plant Production Learnership. The
enthusiastic learners and the Scientific Roets (PTY) Ltd
facilitator received permission from the nursery owner to meet
every Tuesday to work through the programme which started in
January 2007. Because of the low literacy level of the learners
special emphasis was initially placed on language and
communication, math literacy and efficiency in their duties
relating to the growth and sale of indigenous plants.
Due to the nature of the Simply Indigenous Nursery enterprise,
learning material was adapted to emphasize application of the
learning to indigenous plants and the production of Macadamia
nuts, especially production, pest control, safety precautions,
mixing and application of pesticides and post-application safety
measures. Harvesting, processing and marketing were among the
main points of interest.
Even though the literacy level of the learners was quite low
they showed great enthusiasm and dedication throughout the
learning program and were quick to grasp concepts and do
practicals as required.
The training was successfully completed in December 2008.
