Lugelweni
Goose Down Project

Scientific Roets in collaboration with WEZA Social Development
Facilitators were appointed by the Alfred Nzo District
Municipality with funding provided by the ECDC to develop a
business plan for this Co-operative.
The Lugelweni Goose Down Project includes 25 individuals from
the Mt Ayliff area who have organized themselves into a fully
registered Co-operative and have started farming with geese on
land already allocated to them by the community and the
councilors with the intention of developing value-added goose
down products. Here feathers harvested from the geese will lead
to the production and sale of goose down products ranging from
clothing and linen to decorative and useful products.
The Business Plan identified the final infrastructure and
equipment requirements of the facility and proposed several
production scenarios, marketing opportunities and product
ranges. The Business Plan furthermore determined that a total of
25 permanent jobs can be created by the facility and
approximately 25 temporary jobs can be created during the
construction of the Goose Production facility. Skills
development can be enhanced by the involvement of MAPPP-SETA
(responsible for crafting), AGRI-SETA (Agriculture) and the
Tourism and Hospitality SETA (THETA). These SETA’s have
registered qualifications and skills programmes which would
ensure capacity building in the fields of tourism, customer
service, business skills, agriculture and crafting. A funding
proposal to AgriSETA to provide this group with Business and
Poultry Skills was successful and training will commence in
February 2008.
A proposal to fund these development costs has been submitted to
the Alfred Nzo District Municipality.
