Kokstad
Landfill Site
This project, in service to the Greater Kokstad Municipality,
was aimed at rehabilitating the Kokstad Landfill Site into a
more convenient dumping area, to control the way people were
dumping and also to relocate people who were living on the
dumping site. This project was divided into two contracts. i.e.
Fence Contract and Earthworks Contract

1. Fence Contract
Fencing the area served to control and prevent unauthorized
entry onto the dumping site premises. This contract took three
months to complete. Fencing has ensured that there is no further
unauthorized entry; all the people entering the site now leaves
their details at the gate.
2. Earthworks Contract
This contract consisted of several activities:
• Dividing the dumping site into cells so that there will be an
organized process of dumping.
• Installation of a sub-soil drainage system because the dumping
area is situated on a wetland (the sub-soil drainage pipe
channels water into a pond which is situated at the lower level
of the dumping area).
• Excavating two ponds to store water coming from the dumping
area.
• Construction of a retaining wall outside the dumping site
which will be used for separating the garbage e.g. bottles,
papers, metal etc.
