To Investigate the Development of an Integrated Supply-Chain for Point-of-Lay Pullets in Kokstad

Large point-of-lay pullet suppliers may become unreliable and provide preferential supply to “in-house” egg producers if consumer demand for eggs is high or sporadic setbacks occur at their pullet production facilities. Smaller independent egg producers are dependant on this reliable supply of high-quality, point-of-lay pullets to maintain optimal production levels and to supply local demands. The only current source of high-quality, point-of-lay pullets are a small number of large suppliers located outside of the rural community of Greater Kokstad. An opportunity therefore exists for the reliable supply of high-quality, 18-week-old, point-of-lay pullets in the Kokstad area.

Mrs Seyo Sibisi, owns farmland within the Kokstad area and previously operated a substantial broiler operation producing 8000 broilers per cycle. Her poultry rearing experience, ownership of suitable farm land, and the location of this immediate market for point-of-lay pullets within the Kokstad area, position her perfectly to take on the challenge of producing pullets for this market.

Utilising funding successfully obtained from the KwaZulu-Natal EU funded Gijima Programme, Scientific Roets (PTY) Ltd, with previous experience in similar research, has been appointed to investigate, analyse and conceptualise the market and market expansion potential for point-of-lay pullets within the Greater Kokstad region, the scale of operations that would be viable and profitable, and the technological, infrastructural, human resource and institutional requirements of such an integrated operation. The intended outcomes of the project include capacity building in the technological, production and managerial aspects of pullet production, and a “Feasibility Study and Business Plan” which will be used by the project beneficiaries to solicit funding to establish a locally owned and operated integrated supply chain for point-of-lay pullets.

The project partners include, Mrs Seyo Sibisi, who owns agricultural land and has experience in poultry production, Mr Peter Adam, the owner of Petlin Eggs, who, amongst other egg producers in the region, requires a more reliable source of high-quality, point-of-lay pullets, and Dr Merida Roets of Scientific Roets (PTY) Ltd, an Animal Scientist/Agricultural Economist, who specializes in the development of innovative rural development initiatives. Assistance is also provided by poultry specialists such as Dr Peter Plumstead (now residing in the UK).
