Greater
Kokstad Municipality ABET Project

This project, requested by the Greater Kokstad Municipality, is
implemented in collaboration with Media Works and is funded by
the LGSeta.
Scientific Roets has prepared a well-equipped computer-based
learning centre for this programme.
The ABET courses presented by Scientific Roets (PTY) Ltd include
4 Levels of Communication in English, 4 Levels of Numeracy,
Levels 1 in Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans (These classes are
computer-based. Learners do their lessons independently on the
computer with the facilitator always near-at-hand to answer
questions. After completing their computer lesson, the learner
does workbook exercises which are meant to be done either
individually or in groups) and Basic oral (This class is for
people who cannot read or write at all. It is different from the
higher levels of learning as it uses face-to-face facilitation).
Scientific Roets (PTY) Ltd has 6 qualified ABET facilitators
in-house, with Dudu Tenza and Mpho Mazubane facilitating this
Programme.
Currently 39 employees of the Greater Kokstad Municipality have
completed their programmes. From October to December 2007 the
Scientific Roets Learning Centre, which is a registered IEB
Examination Centre, saw these learners (as well as learners from
the Farm Workers ABET Programme, writing their exams.
Each learner writes an exam developed and adjudicated by IEB
(Independent Examination Board) after finishing their lessons.
Results are trickling in, and thus far (Jan 2008) all the
learners who have written exams have passed.
This programme will continue in 2008.
