Farm Worker ABET Programme

Our Adult Basic Education and Training Programme - in collaboration with MEDIA-WORKS - aims at affording farm employees an opportunity to enhance their literacy- and numeracy-, as well as life-, skills. This programme is funded by AGRI-SETA. Learners are firstly assessed to ensure that they are placed at the correct starting level. Assessment is done to prevent learners from finding the programme too difficult or too easy.

There are currently four farms in the Kokstad and Cedarville area that have learners who are enrolled on this programme. Computers and workbooks are supplied to each farm (1 computer per 10 learners) and become the property of the farm over the course of time. Learners are currently enrolled in English Literacy Level 1, English Literacy Level 2 and IsiXhosa Level 1. Three farms - Felstead Farm, Fallodon Farm and Palmiet Farm - have learners who wrote their first exam on the 6th of December 2007 at the Scientific Roets Learning Centre in Kokstad. These learners are anxiously awaiting their results from the IEB so that they can move to the next level. Paradise Farm, which is the 4th farm to join the programme has learners who are will be writing their exams in February 2007.

Sceintific Roets (PTY) Ltd acts a link between farms, MEDIA-WORKS and Agri-SETA and ensures the smooth running of the programme on all the farms. Scientific Roets has 6 qualified ABET facilitators, two of whom visit each farm weekly for facilitation and administration. Facilitators print reports, mark workbooks, load workbook scores and conduct facilitation and giving learners extra homework. Scientific Roets is also responsible for monthly reporting to MEDIA-WORKS/Agri-SETA. MEDIA-WORKS/Agri-SETA is responsible for moderation of the ABET project.

This progamme is ensuring that farm employees become better citizens and better employees to their employers. These learners are showing a lot of enthusiasm, dedication and determination. It is delightful to see older people who were never before able to read and write their names, achieve and surpass this milestone. This programme is an example where Scientific Roets supports the National Skills Development Strategy of “Life-long Learning”.
