Innovation Systems Approach to the Scientific Roets Goat Initiative

Capricorn SA is based on an Innovation Systems approach to rural development. This approach places emphasis on:
  • Dynamic and sustainable agricultural markets
  • Sustainable use of natural resources ( Land Care)
  • Equitable distribution of wealth
  • Public-private partnership (PPP)
  • Co-operative and participatory
  • Gender-sensitive
  • Integrated approach
  • Appropriate infrastructure development
  • Research

This approach is espoused by NEPAD’s CAADP, FARA, and Regional Organisations, but, based on the available literature; few case studies are available to support the approach. The work, at several sites throughout South Africa, captured in “From Folklore to Feasibility: The Commercialisation of South Africa’s Indigenous Goats” (Roets, 2004), is in fact a series of such case study successes. Building on this success, this project intends the up-scaling and out-scaling of the methodology to other viable centres in South Africa.

The Innovation Systems Approach to the “Scientific Roets Goat Initiative” proposed here is illustrated in Figure 1 below.
