INTRODUCING CAPRICORN SA! South African possesses approximately 6 million goats, of which 85% belong to small-scale rural farmers. These animals are used primarily for traditional and cultural purposes, but more of these farmers are realizing that these animals represent a potential income generating livestock resource. The National Department of Agriculture has recently suggested a drive to increase goat production (10%) as a viable method to improve rural livelihoods, increase equity in the agricultural sector, establish a new commodity for export and retail, and to create employment. This programme is a Scientific Roets initiative. Fourteen Goat Projects are targeted within this initiative. Several of them are at various stages of implementation.
